I’m still struggling, of course, with the decision I must make. The latest email from my (potential) credit counselor suggests that I contact an attorney. In other words, “there is no hope.”

But for now. I have money in my pocket.

Both the girls are in the chess club, and with today’s tournament came an unbudgetted expense. Now, I know ahead of time when the tournaments are held, so I should be able to plan for the expenses of lunch and refreshments ahead of time, but last week the bank account went into overdraw mode and there was a huge deficit to start the week with. Of course, this means that my budget is blown out of the water before the week even starts.

Did I mention that I got a really good deal on a couple of roasts at Jewel this week? And that Quilted Northern was 1/2 price at Meijer (even less with a $1 coupon!). I’m not sure that I should mention that the 5 tubs of sour cream I bought were free, because I haven’t yet worked out what I’m going to do with them! LOL!

I have yet to work out the bills I can pay this week.

There is time.

We’ll be fine.

I’m working on something …

I really appreciate all my friends who have been throwing me landlines – there’s a lot of good information out there!

I also apologize to those who expressed that I was trying to pull on people’s heartstrings. That is certainly not the intention of this soul-baring experience. I am in a situation that I’m sure a lot of people are finding themselves in lately. The recession has not been kind to anyone, most of all my low-income peers. If I can put a voice to the problem, a human face to the situation, then it is possible that my story is simply an echo of another person’s story. And if I can just help that person out of the same predicament I find myself in, then I’ve done a good thing.

If I don’t help a single soul, then I’ll just consider it therapy.

I hope to have some time to update my situation tomorrow. I can barely see through the tears that follow Hope for Haiti. The benefit concert was simply wonderful. Well done, perfectly executed, and predictably heart-wrenching.

Post 104! I think my 100th post just whizzed by without so much as a blink!

For those following my financial woes, I had my first appointment with the credit counselor today. Was it an omen that they lost power 30 seconds before I showed up for my appointment? Probably.

I had completed the preliminary paperwork, which detailed my cash flow. So we were able to complete that part of the appointment. We discussed the program, and what the next step would be. She would send me a spreadsheet when her computer was powered up and I would send her the payslip I forgot to take with me (doh!)

Boy was I surprised when I got the email! And it wasn’t until I read her spreadsheet that I realized I’d been doing it wrong all along! Here are the nitty gritties: I’m currently operating at a deficit of about $91 a month (more, actually. I forgot to put my electricity bill in the spreadsheet!) But here’s the rub. That’s before you calculate what I need to pay on my credit cards! All the time I’ve been doing budgets, and thinking I could squeak by, and this has been the reason I’ve failed every time.

I. Forgot. To. Add. In. The. Credit. Card. Payments.

(Here’s where you see me hitting my head on the wall, chanting “stupid, stupid, stupid!”)

The agency can get the interest rate reduced on two of the cards, but National City will not come to the party. And the sad thing? I cut up my credit cards, and because the banks see no new activity on your account, they raise the interest rate. Nice, huh? Way to help out the financial victims, banks!

The Debt Management Program will cost me $450 a month, that’s the cost of the service (a very reasonable $25) and the payments to my credit card vultures, errrr, I mean, providers. My shortfall is then somewhere in the range of just over $500 a month.

That’s $500 a month I have to “trim” off my current budget to be able to afford to get out of debt. Now, let’s take a look at where we can shave off some dollars.

Mortgage? No
Car payment? Nope
Childcare? Nuh-uh
Utilities? Not really
Cable? Just cut back to basic, saving about $20
Phone? Will change to $55 plan (that’s cell. I don’t have a home phone)
Groceries/household shopping? I think the $250/month I currently work with is very reasonable
Netflix? Just cancelled it
Gas/Auto insurance? Can’t do it
Clothing? I think $20/month is a very reasonable budget amount!

In short, I can probably trim about $100 by cutting here and there, but that’s not enough to get me out of debt. Not even if it took 100 years!

Solution #1. Get another job! Well, another job means more income (that’s the point, right?) but more income means that I would lose my child care subsidy. It also means I would have to find (and pay) someone to take care of the girls while I went to that second job. It also means that we would be bumped up from reduced price school meals to full price full meals. Now, follow me closely here: in order to make enough money to cover what I would lose in subsidies, and what I would need to pay for school lunches, and what I would need to cover my debt, I’d need a job that paid me almost $17,000 a year. $1416 a month. $326 a week. Oh wait! I didn’t figure in the babysitting costs!

Solution #2. Bankruptcy.

I think I need to sleep on this.

Donating groceries felt so good that I needed to donate more!

Today’s shopping coup netted $159.37 worth of goodies for just $24.36 (and I still have $15 in catalinas to spend on my next shopping trip). Here’s what I came home with:

6 jars of Hellman’s mayo
15 Progresso soups
24 cans of veggies (beans, peas, corn, creamed corn)
11 boxes cereal (Golden Grahams, Cinnamon Toast Crunch, Cheerios & Cocoa Puffs)
11 packs of Chex mix, Gardettos & Cheerios mix

No paper towels this time LOL!

I put the brand names in there because when I donated the cereal, they said “Oooh! It’s REAL cereal!” I don’t know what they thought they were going to be getting!

This really isn’t anything extraordinary – you, too, can learn the art of smart couponing from Retire With Coupons – if I could get just 10 friends to shop like this, I’m sure we could help some of the local food pantries get through the crisis they are currently experiencing.

Actually, it’s not just the food pantries that are suffering. Think about your local woman’s shelter, the Salvation Army, “halfway” houses, homeless shelters. There IS enough food to go around if we all were to shop just a little bit smarter and use the tools the food manufacturers provide to us. And they really do need more than just food. You can get some amazing deals on shampoo, deodorant, over-the-counter medications, cleaning products, toothpaste, paper goods such as tissues and paper towels.

Would you think about it, and see what you can do to help?

Now, I think I’ll go have some soup for dinner …

It didn’t come at the beginning of the year, this feeling. At least not at the start of the calendar year. This little mini-phenomenon, I believe, came at the start of the Chinese New Year.

So, is it a coincidence that this is the Year of the Ox, and my chinese astrological sign is the ox? Is this how it is supposed to work? You are lucky when the actual year and your birth sign collide? That would explain it, I guess.

It started off when I “found” both my brother and sister. I had noticed someone who may have been my sister on Facebook, so I took a punt and sent a friend request. The next day, I had an email from my brother, Simon, saying “Sarah can’t get on Facebook from work so she asked me to contact you” – and just like that, I was reconnected with a brother and sister I haven’t been in communication with for at least 10 years!

In the past 2 days I’ve accomplished a lot (for me!). It started off with a conversation about home-made laundry detergent. So, I thought I’d try it. I got all the ingredients together and spent some time at the stove making laundry detergent. It seems to do the job just fine, and it smells just how I want laundry detergent to smell! Ylang ylang and woodrose – yum!

Of course I wasn’t done there, then I needed to know how to make fabric softener. Vinegar, baking soda and hot water – who knew!

Another friend, Shawnette, had noticed a post of mine where I had been talking about using pink lotion on Ciel’s hair. Shawnetter sent me a recipe for an alternative. I was only missing glycerine, so I went ang bought that at lunchtime, and whipped up a batch before we went to the library.

My latest accomplishment was pho. There used to be a little restaurant (if you can call it that) in Normal run by a Vietnamese couple. They had a fairly limited menu, but it did include the essential Vietnamese food – pho. Then downtown Normal became “Uptown” Normal, and this little shop was bought by the Coffee Hound – thus went the pho. And the restaurant. There is no other Vietnamese restaurant in Bloomington-Normal, and Peoria is a bit of a hike for a bowl of soup, so I thought I’d better learn to make it on my own. And I did.

Now, there is a challenge with pho for me. I’m 98% vegan, so I couldn’t make the traditional pho with beef stock and beef, I had to sacrifice – so I did manage to find a vegetarian version, which is essentially vegan. I was short two ingredients … star anise and cloves. So my broth wasn’t so traditional. But it still tasted SO good! Wanna see?

Now, I’m off to search for a moisturizer recipe
