- 5 Breyers ice cream,
- 17 Knorr rice sides
and a 3lb bag of apples for 28.96 after store discounts and coupons, and I still have $15 in catalinas to spend on my next shopping trip, so, effectively it cost 13.96.

This is a total saving of $154.71, which makes me a happy camper with a full pantry!

We survived no less than FOUR cab rides in Chicago! I feel quite accomplished!

Before I update on our last day in the windy city, I have a shopping triumph to report:

After being in Chicago for 3 days, I really needed to get some REAL bargains at the grocery store – my budget for the month is severely depleted (and eating into next months budget too!).

I headed to Jewel for the Kellogg’s/milk deal and remembered I had some coupons from the freezer deal (I bought a freezer from Cub Foods last week for $157 and got $160 in coupons) that I could use to get something for dinner.

One of the coupons I had was for a free Palermo pizza ($7.59), and they happened to be BOGO (Buy one, get one free)! The other “free” coupon I used was for Mars ice cream – we got a 12 count mini mix box ($4.99).

I found some of the Tyson chicken meals (stir fry chicken and chicken fajitas) were on clearance for 3.49 each (1/2 price) – they are made to serve 3, so they are ideal!

I bought 2 Glucerna cereals (4.49 – 50c with store loyalty card) and had a $5 coupon for each.
Bought 7 Kellogg’s cereals – 4 Frosted Flakes (had 2 x $1/2 coupons) & 3 of the other Kellogg’s cereals that were on sale for 1.98 (also had a 70c coupon)

4 Ronzoni Bistro packages for free (BOGO plus 2 x BOGO coupons)

Also used $10 catalina (or cats = coupon that prints from the cash register) that I earned on last weeks Kraft deal.

Total = 68.32

Jewel Osco receipt

Preferred card savings = 20.47
Coupons = 41.26
Free items not calculated on register tape = 10.58, making the actual value of items bought $78.79
Total OOP = 6.59
Plus, received cats for 3 free gallons of milk.

I’ll take another post for the remainder of the Chicago trip!

In the far reaches of my own little mind, I think I pulled off a shopping coup this weekend – Yoplait kids 6-pack yogurt at 2 for $4 with a $1.50 off coupon for each pack – essentially, $0.50 for six little yogurt cups, just to save you doing the math! So, here I am, all smug, with my Yoplait Kids and my Trix (also at bargain basement prices) … a fridge full, no less. And Ciel says “I think I’ll have yogurt for dessert”.

She gets down from the table, opens the fridge and says “Where’s the yogurt?”

Me: It’s all on the bottom shelf of the fridge, baby.

She: I can’t see it

Me: Well, just bend your knees so you can see the bottom shelf, and you’ll find it.

She: All I can see is Dora – Dora is for babies

Me: That is the Yoplait, don’t worry about what’s on the package. If you don’t want that, the Trix is behind it

(Bear in mind that we have four 6-packs of yogurt right in front of her face)

She: I don’t want Dora yogurt

Me: So have the Trix

… at which point I decide to go and help her by pointing out the flavors

She: I want crush cups

Me: We don’t have crush cups – you’ll have to have Trix or Yoplait

She: I don’t want Trix or Yoplait, I want crush cups

……… and so it continued, ending up with Ciel being put in time out for being disrespectful. We did have the “there are children in this neighborhood who don’t even have yogurt” talk, and the “I don’t have the money to buy crush cups” talk. And when it all came down to it, she was happy with the Trix Watermelon Burst (I wish you could see my face grimacing) and apologized for acting out and yelling at me.

Moral of the story
If you go shopping without your children in order to save money, be prepared for the battle that follows!
